2020 Week 3 Big XII Awards

Team of the Week : Kansas State - 2 years in a row the Sooners went into a game vs KState and 2 years in a row they come out with an L.  Rattler didn't look as sharp as he did in Game 1, but the competition was a step up also.  The Wildcates went into the game short handed, and were also DOWN 21 in the second half and still came back to knock off the Sooners.  Chris Kleiman, after joining Kansas State from North Dakota State, is now 2-0 vs Oklahoma.

Game of the Week : Texas 63 - Texas Tech 56 - This thing was a Wild West Shootout in Lubbock.  The Red Raiders got up by 15 on the Longhorns in the 4th quarter.  Then Ehlinger took out his six shooters and the Horns also got a lucky bounce on a onside kick.  It lasted one OT and Texas applied its grip on Tech to escape with a win.

Player(s)of the Week : Breece Hall - RB - Iowa State : The second year RB opened the scoring with a 75 yard scamper in the 2nd quarter vs TCU.  He helped the Cyclones seal the win with 2 more scores in the 4th quarter.  Hall finished with 155 yards with those 3 scores.

Sam Ehlinger - QB - Texas : Arguably the leader in the clubhouse for the Heisman.  Versus the Red Raiders, Ehlinger tossed 5 tds, ran for another and lead the Horns back from down 15 in the last 3:13 of the game to force Overtime.  Also tossed a two point conversion to tie the game at 56 to send it to OT.  The Longhorns QB rushed for 70 yards and tossed 262 along with those scores.

Alex Gordon

I've talked about this before of my disconnect from baseball as a fan after the heartbreak of 2008 with the Cubs losing back to back first round series after being the best team in baseball.  They struggled for 6 years, and were taken off my local cable package.  Outside of the Sunday Night

Baseball appearances I didn't seek them out till daily till about 2014.  Yea I know, bad fan.
In the mean time what was on my cable package was Fox Sports KC.  That allowed me to watch this young and up and coming fun team of the Royals.  Watching this crew brought my love of baseball back.  I would seek them out nightly as I could on the TV.  I would drive down once or twice a year to The K and get tickets and watch them, and even got my dad to go to one of their games. (yes it was vs the Yankees).  They had a great young core, a helluva bullpen and a few veterans placed in there.  One was a Forever Royal, Alex Gordon.

Alex was a solid batter, but an amazing defender!  He put his body into walls, thrown into the fans.  Made him a blast to watch.  I was so happy that they won 2 AL Pennants in a row and the 2015 World Series as a capper for his career.  They've taken a bit of a downturn with the rebuild and probably was a good time to ride off into the sunset.

Thanks Alex for making baseball fun again for this fan!

2020 Week 2 Big XII Awards

With Baylor - Houston cancelled it was a 1 game week in the Big XII so this will be pretty simple of an awards post.

Team of the Week : Oklahoma State

Game of the Week : Oklahoma State 16-7 over Tulsa - The game was really ugly, IMO, to watch.  Neither team looked crisp which I would expect in the world of Covid College Football.

Player of the Week : Chuba Hubbard - RB - Oklahoma State - Hubbard scored the Cowboys only touchdown in the game and rushed for 93 yards in the 16-7 win.

2020 Week 2 Big XII Picks

1 week in the books and on the bright side, there are no SunBelt teams on the schedule this week.  The SBC went 3-0 vs the Big XII last week with wins over Iowa State, Kansas & Kansas State.  Houston Baptist almost got one for the Southland vs Texas Tech.  The good news for those that lost, they are still 0-0 in conference play.  The good of week 1, Texas and Oklahoma did Texas and Oklahoma things.  Spencer Rattler and Sam Ehlinger looked AMAZING.  West Virginia had a good showing on the ground game and got some confidence going into conference season.    Now week 2.  It's a light week, 2 games.

Baylor opens up the 2020 season and the Dave Aranda era vs SWC Rival Houston. Baylor was a surprise team last year under Matt Rhule that went 11-3 and a New Years 6 Bowl.  Aranda comes in after a National Championship as Defensive Coordinator at LSU.  It will be curious how the team blends to his mind as a Defensive Coordinator and the offense that it put up last year under returning QB Charlie Brewer.  Houston is starting year 2 under Dana Holgorsen.  Dana is no stranger to Baylor being at WVU prior.  Will Houston take the strides to get back to the AAC title game and as a contender?  This game is a quick schedule add also in the world of college football in the Covid landscape.

I think you see poor tackling and teams having issues with penalties holding, etc.  Both teams going back and forth offensively and taking the lead.  In the end I think Baylor gets a score or 2 in the 4th quarter to get the win and cover.  Baylor 41 - Houston 36

Big XII Game of the Week
Houston vs Baylor

11 - FOX - Baylor (-4)

11 - ESPN - Oklahoma State (-22.5)

Big Ten Fall Football?

As of 330 today I haven't heard of any vote taken place by the Big Ten.  Dan Patrick has been correct in most of what he has heard, though at times I think the twitterverse criticized him.  But mostly been spot on.  Here is today's update.

2020 Week 1 Big XII Awards

Week 1 of the 2020 Big XII Season is in the books.  2 Games ended up being cancelled due to COVID-19 (Baylor & TCU).  I don't foresee the conference teams not named Texas or Oklahoma scheduling SunBelt teams in the future as the SBC went 3-0 as visitors vs the Big XII.   This weeks Big XII Results.

Team of the Week :  West Virginia - The Mountaineers had one of the worst rushing offenses in college football last year.  Week one they go out and roll up 329 yards rushing and racking up 5 touchdowns on the ground.  Alec Sinkfield and Leddie Brown both scored twice and ran for 123 yards against Eastern Kentucky.  Now can the keep that up against conference competition.

Game of the Week :  Arkansas State 35 - Kansas State 31 - Yes its a loss for the Big XII and an 0-2 week for the conference vs the SunBelt, but this game was back and forth all day.  KState pushed to a big lead.  Some trickery helped the Redwolves come back initially.  Some wind was taken out of the Wildcats sails with Arkansas State driving for the go ahead score, Safety Wayne Jones was taken off on a stretcher.  The RedWolves then marched down to score with 38 seconds left  on Jonathan Adams 3rd touchdown reception.  They then and held off a last hurrah by the Wildcats for the upset win in Manhattan.

Player of the Week :  Sam Ehlinger - QB - Texas -
What ever you can do I can do better?  Spencer Rattler goes off in the first half vs Missouri State and looked like he might have this wrapped up.  In comes the gunslinger.  Sam threw for 426 yards and 5 touchdowns while completing 75% of his passes.  He opened up with a 78 yard touchdown, came back then with scores on throws of 20, 40, 5, and 6 in route to a lead of 45-3 lead over UTEP at the half.  The Longhorns won 59-3 with Sam watching from the sidelines the majority of the second half.  The next 9 games the competition will get more difficult, but If Sam keeps this up OU may have a hard time claiming another Big XII title.  How great will the duel between Ehlinger and Spencer Rattler be in the Red River Shootout.

Hope you enjoyed this opening weekend with major college football.  Who knows how long we'll have it in this crazy year.  The ACC is already talking about how many schools need to be playing to not cancel the season.  The Big Ten is talking about a revote early this week for an October start.

One update to note, Baylor will now host Houston next week at noon on Fox.

Iowa State's Jamie Pollard Podcast

Excellent podcast by Chris Williams of CycloneFanatic and KXNO with Iowa State's Jamie Pollard.

Pollard is one of, in my opinion, the most open and honest Athletics Directors out there.  I put Gene Smith and Barry Alvarez up there in that group too.

Great listen with whats going on at Iowa State and a lot of what's going on in Ames and a lot of campuses across the nation with the state of Covid.

2020 Week 1 Big XII Picks

If you followed my twitter feed in the past, or way before that my posts on my old blog Wide Right, I am a Big Ten fan.  I follow it the most, I bet on it, and usually have conference only pick'ems for it on Yahoo Fantasy or CBS Fantasy.  With the Big Ten being on the sidelines, as of now, I'll be focusing on the Big XII.  I usually follow them the second after the B1G, and have conference only pick'em for them also.  Here are my picks for this week for Week 1.

Game of the Week
11 AM - ESPN - Line ISU (-11.5)

Louisiana is a favorite to win the SunBelt conference; Iowa State is a dark horse to make it to the Big XII title game and is a Top 25 team (Top 10 for Tim Brando).  Iowa State has a history of starting slow out of the gates and had trouble with UNI last year in its opener.  They can't take the Cajun's lightly here.  With only family, and cheer squad and band in the stands the atmosphere won't be raucous as it usually is in Jack Trice.  I think you see Louisiana come out swinging here and take a lead maybe up to 10 points but I don't think Brock Purdy lets the Clones lose.
PICK : Iowa State 34-21

BIG XII Weekly Picks

Like most opening weeks, going straight chalk.  From experience in the past something always happens and there is a slip up.  Enjoy the first week of big time college football COVID-19 style.

Bel Air

This looks like another reason to get the Peacock!  I know Netflix rolls out a bunch of originals, and probably not misses then hits.  But with the few I've seen from Peacock and what's to come from Disney+, they have some competition.

Dune Trailer & Reaction

The Sci-Fi flick Dune released its first trailer today.  Looks pretty cool, I HOPE HOPE HOPE we can get to theaters to see it in December.   Great cast too!

Mulan

I love watching movies in the theater, but can get used to these Premium access VOD, especially with the kids and saving some money at the theater.  Tonight I rented Mulan.  It was originally supposed to be released in March and had planned to go see it, but then Covid-19 hit and delayed things.

I had never seen the animated version of Mulan.  It came out while I was in college so I wasn't really into seeing those type of flicks.  My older kids have seen it without me.  So I didn't know what I was getting into.  I knew the backstory, female in a male army, and well Eddie Murphy as the dragon.

Coming in blind, I really liked the flick.  Enjoyed it quite a bit and can see myself watching it again. It was a bit of Star Wars and Hunger Games all in one.  It had great story I think for little girls I thought, that they can be anything, and to also not let that keep them back.  The action was good for a Disney flick, and the side story with the woman/witch was cool too.  Felt at the end like I was watching some WWE too.  Liked that little side bit.

I think this was Disney's best take at live action with humans, and its up there with the Lion King for me.

6/10 Stars

Lasting Image : Chadwick Boseman

A week ago news broke that Chadwick Boseman passed away at the age of 42 after a private 4 year battle with colon cancer.  During that time he filmed 3 BILLION dollar flicks in Black Panther, Infinity War and End Game.  Black Panther became a sensation and revelation in Hollywood.  He also filmed 21 Bridges, Da 5 Bridges and Marshall while sick.

Black Panther is his HUGE role, and he was one of my favorites in Captain America : Civil War.  I still copy one of his lines in Civil War, the first time he meets Clint in the airport battle scene.  I loved the world that was created in Wakanda for Black Panther.  He will certainly be missed in the MCU and it will be interesting how Marvel handles this.

BUT my lasting image of Chadwick is in 42 as Jackie Robinson.  This was my first impression of him on the big screen and I thought he embodied Jackie and nailed it.

2020 College Football Predictions

Well this is a weird one to start off with.  Usually I would have already done this, schedules would have been W & L'd and I'd know who I'd have.  Things have been a bit out of place, but alas it is 2020.

Championship games are going to be a little different this year too.  It sucks not being able to post Big Ten or Pac-12 on here, and well I don't do the little guys (sorry MAC, CUSA & Sunbelt).

I would also normally have a pick'em pool and weekly picks, I don't know if that is going to happen, but just keep your eye out.  Also William Hill, sorry but with this being a weird season I'm probably not going to be betting on much.  But with the Predictions.....here we go.

ACC
Clemson over Notre Dame

SEC
Alabama over Florida

BIG XII
Texas over Oklahoma State

AAC
Cincinnati over Memphis

The Cyclones are adding a new patch to their uniforms this year to honor Jack Trice. Really cool thing to add to the jesrey.

You Only Have One First

They say there is nothing like your first; first kiss, first beer, and well first MLB game.  Time to jump in a time machine back to 1988.

Years earlier my parents took my older siblings to Chicago for a vacation.  I was to young to really appreciate it, and well probably was left to not be in the way at a young age, and was left with Grandma & Grandpa.  A few years later I found a white haired, big glasses wearing guy who sang on cable TV and had become a Cubs fan.

Outside of going to Clear Lake every summer I can prob count on my hand the vacations we went on. (The Dells, South Dakota, Orlando, Ft Lauderdale)  Now a little older and since I didn't get to go on the previous trip, in June of 1988 I was going to get to go to Chicago.

A few things stick out from the drive there.  Before we got started, I set my suitcase out in the driveway since the car was locked and a small rain shower came through and my suitcase got soaked.  Somewhere about in Western Illinois on the interstate into town dad hit a duck and I remember turning around in the back seat to see it flop around on the road.  Finally looking out the front window for the first time at the Chicago skyline in awe.

We hit the tourist places throughout the city.  I remember the dolphins and otters at Shedd Aquarium, remember dad getting excited going through the submarine at the Museum of Science and Industry.  We stayed at the Essex Inn and had breakfast every morning in the little restaurant there on Michigan Ave.  Had pizza at Gino's East and I always thought it was such a huge place and all the graffiti on the wall.  All i really wanted was though to get to Wrigley.

I remember getting up that morning, getting my Cubs gear on, got my glove ready.  We went down to the Subway and I got my first ride on the L.  Dad was counting down the stops from the map in the train car and said "Wrigley is next" and then I got my first glimpse of the friendly confines.  I had been to Iowa football games before and always got goose bumps walking into Kinnick, I got the same goose bumps seeing Wrigley.

Wrigleyville wasn't what it is today and well I was 10 then so we didn't stay out of the stadium long after getting off the train.  We walked over and saw the marquee and then went in to the stadium through the front gate.

The Cubs were playing the Phillies so the game became a bragging rights game with my brother. I remember our seats were on the 1st base side under the second deck, so we had shade.  Dad said that was a good thing since Sutcliffe was pitching and he usually adds 30 minutes to any game.  While they were warming up, dad and I went down to the front row where Andre Dawson (the 1987 NL MVP) was warming up.  Along with about 10 other kids we were trying to get his autograph, alas that didn't happen.  I would get his autograph 28 years later.

I remember some sailors sitting in front of us in their dress whites.  It was a hot day, and on the concourses in Wrigley some tar had got bubbly and made its way to the bottom of my shoe.  I put my foot up on the back of the seat in front of me and as one leaned back, a black smudge made its way to his back.  From watching movies, a part me thought I just earned this guy some push ups because of a dirty uniform.

Most plays from this game don't stick out as much 32 years later as big plays but for a few midway through the game.  Davey Martinez had got a hit to get on base.  Up came Shawon Dunston.  He smacked a homer run into the basket in about left, left center.  That was it for the scoring.  Being 10 I was all over the place.  I remember the vendors coming up and down the stairs and seeing all the souvenirs.  I wanted one of those foam hands, but eventually settled on a baseball.  Playing with the ball and looking all over the rest of the game seemed like a blur but for the 7th Inning Stretch.  I finally got to sing in person with Harry.  Looked up over my left shoulder I got to watch him wave the mic around like I had on tv.

The Cubs won 2-1.  The day, the trip was made.  I've been to Wrigley 10 times since that day in 1988.  I'm glad I got the ball especially now that I eventually started to collect them.  Looking in the case that first one will hold a special place in the memory bank being there with my dad and mom as it sits next to the ball from my son's first trip to Wrigley with me.

Up Next : A Family First

I'm So Excited

I feel like I'm already signed up for a bunch of streaming services, YouTube TV being my main one.  BUT I may need to add the Peacock to the list here for the return of Saved By The Bell!  Growing up in the 90s for kids this was almost a religion to watch this show!

Mandalorian Season 2

The release date of Mandalorian Season 2 is out!  October 30th!  I wish we could binge this but love what Disney+ does with the weekly Release.

I'm excited about the rumors coming for this season, Ahsoka & Boba Fett!  Hopefully we get a trailer coming soon.

No Time To Die New Trailer

I'm gonna miss Daniel Craig as James Bond.  These have been my favorite of the 007 franchise.  Here is the newest trailer for No Time To Die.  The film's release date is now Nov 20, 2020.
