Big Ten Weekly Awards - Week 8

The season is about two-thirds over, this week in the Big Ten we got a 9 overtime HUGE upset, the Buckeyes and Wolverines keep rolling (have we ever said that before?), Wisconsin win in West Lafayette sets up a big game next week in Madison that could/should decide the Big Ten West and quietly Minnesota continues to notch wins.  Think they want that Bowling Green game back?  And who is the front runner for Player of the Year in the conference?  A pair of Buckeyes?

Big Ten Week 7 - Weekly Awards

The bye weeks are hitting the Big Ten and about half of the conference was off BUT fireworks still happened and if you are #2 in the nation you do not want to see Purdue on the schedule.  They did well this:

Else where, Scott Frost can't seem to win close games, still.  The Brass Spitton returns to East Lansing as Indiana slide continues.  The Fighting Fitz's chop at Rutgers and Wisconsin pulls out a tough win vs Army.  Please Big Ten schools, play the military schools more often.

Big Ten Weekly Awards - Week 6

Punting is Winning, Iowa's defense and Tory Taylor helped Iowa along enough to hit on some big pass plays to claim #2 in the AP Poll.  Nebraska looks to be dangerous but the schedule may haunt them but really looking like the second best team in the West and Bielema can't beat his old school (Round 1).  Oh how fun is the East going to be come a couple weeks when these teams start playing each other.  Kenneth Walker III should be on everyone's Heisman list.  Is CJ Stroud going to join him?  Ohio State looks to be in a groove now.

Big XII Weekly Awards - Week 5

Quietly through the first month, the Oklahoma State Cowboys have been just playing some good football and now its October and they are at the top with their in state counterpart Oklahoma in the Big XII.  How good will Bedlam be this year?  Especially with the OU to the SEC nugget.  TCU still is a bit of a thorn in Texas's neck but the Longhorns pulled it out.  And KState almost pulled a trifecta on OU.  Also this just in Kansas is still bad at football.

Big Ten Weekly Awards - Week 5

Week 5 in the books, and quick, who is the second best team in the Big Ten West?  Looking to be like the Nebraska team that lost at Illinois.  The 2021 Powers that Be all came out strong. Iowa, Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan & Michigan State all dominated in wins and are representing the conference in the new AP  Top 25 as all being in the Top 11.

Next week will be the biggest game in the Big Ten in a while not including Ohio State.  A top 5 matchup with Iowa & Penn State and we'll see how good Nebraska is as the Huskers gets a check up with Michigan.

Big Ten Weekly Awards - Week 4

How stacked is the Big Ten after the first full month.  The East has four 4-0 teams and that is not including The Ohio State University.  Rutgers is just 1 loss after the first month, and Indiana is 2-2 at the bottom.  In the West Iowa survived vs Colorado State and is on top with a trip to 4-0 Maryland on Friday.  The bottom of the west looks different this season so far too with it being Northwestern, Wisconsin & Nebraska.

The season is 1/3rd over.  Enjoy October, its going to be fun!

Big Ten Weekly Awards - Week 3

Week 3 the Big Ten had some big moments to make statements, and mostly did so.  Even the Huskers in a loss in the 50th anniversary of the Game of the Century.  Indiana had a top 10 team on the ropes, Penn State whited out Auburn and Michigan and Ohio State rolled again.  The Big Ten East looks like it will be really fun!

Who had the 3 biggest games of the week going this way?  Oregon without Kayvon Thibodeaux going into Columbus and getting a win.  Iowa as an underdog going to Jack Trice against what could be the best Iowa State team ever and dominating Breece Hall and Brock Purdy.  And dare we say Blue is Back with Michigan dominating Washington.

The rest of the Big Ten got in action on what is now Week 1.  And with some conference games to open the season.  This was a tad different but enjoyable.  Really feel bad for Mohamed Ibrahim from Minnesota.  He was eating up the Buckeyes before what seems to be a year ending injury.

2020 Week 8 Big XII Awards

Team of the Week : Kansas State : With a lot of the focus in the conference on the showdown in Stillwater, the Wildcats showed up and did what was expected; they DESTROYED Kansas.  K-State was helped along with 2 punt returns for scores by Phillip Brooks.  55 yards in the first quarter and then 52 at the end of the first half.  The Wildcats are no 4-0 in the Big XII and along with Oklahoma State have big jump ahead of the rest of the conference to get to Arlington and the Big XII Title Game.  With the 55-14 win the 'Cats have won 12 straight Sunflower State Showdowns.  The longest by either school in the battle for the Governors Cup.

Game of the Week : Oklahoma State 24 - Iowa State 21 : The showdown in Stillwater felt more like a Big Ten Game rather than a Big XII shootout.  With these 2 teams defenses I'm not really shocked though.  The Cyclones scored first, but after OSU scored to tie it seemed they had control of the game.  The Pokes in the second half etched out a 10 point lead early in the fourth quarter.  The Clones scored late with 49 seconds left, but couldn't recover the onside kick to make it more interesting.  Oklahoma State along with K-State now are jockeyed ahead of everyone in the conference for the bids to the title game.  The Cowboys needed this one more though with their next 3 games vs Texas, KState and Oklahoma.  Don't count Iowa State out of anything either.  They own the tie breaker over Oklahoma and get Texas and K-State coming up.

Player of the Week : Phillip Brooks - PR - KState :
Brooks set school records for KState for Punt Return yardage and scores in a game with his 2 scores vs Kansas.  Brooks 4 returns totaled 189 yards for the Wildcats.  His first return of 55 yards put KState on the board first.  His other score closed out the first half, essentially putting the nail in the coffin for the Jayhawks.

Big XII Scores
Oklahoma State 24 - Iowa State 21
Oklahoma 33 - TCU 14
Texas Tech 34 - West Virginia 27
Texas 27 - Baylor 16
Kansas State 55 - Kansas 14

2020 Week 8 Big Ten Awards

Welcome back Big Ten Football!  It wasn't the same with out you!  Week 8 (1) brought quarterbacks going on crazy completion streaks, a rivalry trophy game, a few upsets and a shocker in Bloomington.

Team of the Week : Rutgers : The Schiano-effect hitting full power in the Scarlet Knights first game in East Lansing. This could have gone to Indiana (upset of Penn State) or Michigan (a hot pick to be upset-see weekly picks) but this is going to a team that ended a 21 game conference losing streak in a DOMINATING fashion.  Rutgers forced 7 Spartan turnovers; 7!  One coming on the 1 yard line and setting up a 14-0 1st quarter lead.  The game wasn't as close as the 38-27 score, felt more like a 30 pt lead.  Congrats Rutgers on breaking the streak.  Next up, the newly ranked Indiana Hoosiers.

Game of the Week : Indiana 36 - Penn State 35 (OT) : Going into Saturday the Hoosiers were 22-1 vs Penn State all time.  They only gained 211 yards and gave up 488, but got it where it mattered most, on the scoreboard.  They got it by the closest of margins too.  The game went back and forth in spite of the yardage difference.  The Hoosiers raced out to a 17-7 half time lead behind Stevie Scott's 2 touchdown runs.  Penn State owned the 2nd half and got out to a 28-20 lead late in the 4th.  Indiana went 75 yards then in a 1:20 and a 2 point conversion tied the game.  After a short kick and good return, Penn State had a chance to kick a field goal at the end of regulation but missed the 57 yarder.  In overtime, Penn State QB Sean Clifford hit Parker Washington for a score, and added the PAT.  Five players later Michael Penix Jr hit Whop Philyor for the score.  The Hoosiers than opted to go for 2 and well they got it by the closest of margins.

Player of the Week : Grahm Mertz - QB - Wisconsin : The Wisconsin QB made his first career start Friday night vs Illinois, and made it one he won't forget.  Mertz completed his first 17 throws vs the Illini.  That tied a program record.  He also tossed 5 touchdowns among his 20 completions, also a program record.  He finished the game 20/21 with 248 yards.  This was all possible due to the Badgers original start Jack Coan.  Mertz's efforts helped lead the Badgers to a 45-7 win in their conference opener.

Word did come down late Sunday afternoon that Mertz did test positive for Covid-19.  Here's wishing him a speedy recovery!  This also creates another question in the Badger backfield though.

Week 8 Big Ten Scores
Wisconsin 45 - Illinois 7
Purdue 24 - Iowa 20
Ohio State 52 - Nebraska 17
Indiana 36 - Penn State 35
Northwestern 43 - Maryland 3

Michigan 49 - Minnesota 24

2020 Week 6 Big XII Awards

Well this post is gonna be an easy one.  With another postponed game this week (Oklahoma State at Baylor) the Big XII was down to 1 game again this week.  Kansas heading to Morgantown to take on the Mountaineers.

Team of the Week : West Virgina : It took a little bit for the Mountaineers to get going, but late in the first quarter, took the lead in the 2nd quarter and then Leddie Brown hit the turbo button for an 87 yard touchdown scamper and the Defense clamped down on the young JayHawks.

Game of the Week : West Virgina - 38 Kansas - 17 :  Well it didn't have any competition so this is the game of he week.  Kansas came out swinging early to get up 10 nothing then reality set in.  West Virginia would have made Pat McAfee proud by clamping down down on the Jayhawks allowing only 157 total yards while putting up over 544.  The Jayhawks did score late to give any betters a bad beat if you took the Mountaineers at +22.5

Player of the Week : Leddie Brown - WVU - RB : Leddie Brown WENT OFF.  The Mountaineer back rushed for 195 yards, added 5 receptions for 36 yards and had 2 scores.  The later coming on a 87 yard dart where he was shot out of a cannon like Mario after scooping up a star.  After that score the Jayhawks were officially done.

2020 Week 5 Big XII Awards

Game of the week : Oklahoma 53 - Texas 45  4OT :  The Red River Shootout was all that on Saturday.  The first half was tug here and tug there, OU going up by 10, Texas tying the game, and then the 2 entered halftime at 17 a piece.  The 3rd quarter and most of the 4th quarter it looked like OU had a 14 point win locked up and ready to head to Norman.  Then Sam took over and lead the 'Horns to 2 touchdowns in the last 3:28.  Both scored TDs in the first OT and then again in the 2nd OT with the Horns scoring on a great 25 yard scamper by Ehlinger.
In the third quarter both teams missed field goals. Texas had their's blocked by the Sooners and OU shanked it like one of my golf shots.  Then immediately in the 4th OT, the Rattler hit Drake Stoops in the endzone for a score, and added a 2 pt conversion.

Their D then sealed the win with a pick of Ehlinger.  Both teams now have 2 conference losses early in the season.

Team of the Week : Iowa State : Could we be looking at the best team in the confernce even with a loss to Louisiana.  Take away 2 special teams gaffs and the Cyclones might be unbeaten.  The D did whatever it wanted to vs Texas Tech, a team that put up 500+ yards on Texas.  This week though they could only muster up 270 total and 95 through just the first 3 quarters.  Take away another special teams play the Red Raiders would have been held to 8 points.  Brock Purdy looked like Brock Purdy of what we remember.  He threw for 302 yards and 2 scores.

Breece Hall, the ISU back, may have taken the lead of Big XII Player of the Year too with another solid outing of 135 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Iowa State gets a week off before a matchup with Oklahoma State in which the winner gets way out in front of everyone in a trip to Dallas and the Big XII Title Game.

Player of the Week : Breece Hall - RB - Iowa State : If there has been a model of consistency, its the Cyclones Breece Hall.  The Cyclone back has tallied 4 straight 100 yard games so far, racking up 8 touchdowns in the process far.  Saturday he added 135 and 2 vs the Red Raiders and made the running look effortless.  The way he is running reminds me sort of like another back from the state of Iowa in 2008 (Shonn Greene).  If Hall keeps posting the 100+ and multiple td games, he SHOULD be a finalist for the Doak Walker Award and that will most certainly keep Iowa State near the top of the Big XII all year long.

2020 Week 4 Big XII Awards

Team of the Week : Iowa State - This was a close one with TCU, BUT when you get a win over a team for the first time on your home turf since 1960s you get the nod.  The game, played in front of some 15,000 fans, went back and forth after the first quarter.  OU marched down easily their first drive but the Cyclone D held them to a field goal.  Back and forth in the second half, with late in the 4th quarter OU recovered a Purdy fumble and went up 30-23.  Iowa State responded with a long kick return and scored 2 plays later to tie it up.  After a 3 and out from OU, the Cyclones and Breece Hall ran on the Sooners to go up 37-30.  Spencer Rattler then threw a pick sealing the ISU win.   OU is now 0-2 going into the Red River Shootout.  ISU moves to 2-0 in conference play with their only blemish being the loss to Louisiana in the opener.
Game of the Week : TCU 33 - Texas 31 :  The Big XII had really 3 good games this week and it could be easy to say the Iowa State - OU game, but I'll give the nod to TCU vs Texas.  For the second week in a row the Longhorns played from behind.  TCU started the scoring and from the play of Max Duggan and 2 turnovers took a 23-14 lead at Campbell-Williams Field.  Sam Ehlinger did his best to gun sling the Horns back for a second week in a row tossing for 4 scores but in the end was bested by Duggan and his legs.  Duggan threw for 231 yards, and added 79 on the ground with 2 scores.  If the Horns are going to compete for the Big XII they need to shore up the defense and get to where they aren't playing from behind.  Fun fact, the Horned Frogs are 7-2 vs Texas since joining the Big XII.  The state is turning purple from its burnt orange and maroon colors.

Next week's Red River Shootout with OU could be a knockout game for both schools if Texas comes out with a matching second conference loss to the Sooners.

Player of the Week : Chubba Hubbard - RB - Oklahoma State :  Hubbard ran for 145 of the Cowboys 295 yards and scored 2 times as Oklahoma State had their way against Kansas 47-7.  Hubbard's two scores came in the first half leading to a 31-0 halftime lead and give the Cowboys a 3-0 record and 2-0 in Big XII play.  OSU will now the be the hunted along with Iowa State and Kansas State as leaders in the clubhouse early.

9/27/2020

2020 Week 3 Big XII Awards

Team of the Week : Kansas State - 2 years in a row the Sooners went into a game vs KState and 2 years in a row they come out with an L.  Rattler didn't look as sharp as he did in Game 1, but the competition was a step up also.  The Wildcates went into the game short handed, and were also DOWN 21 in the second half and still came back to knock off the Sooners.  Chris Kleiman, after joining Kansas State from North Dakota State, is now 2-0 vs Oklahoma.

Game of the Week : Texas 63 - Texas Tech 56 - This thing was a Wild West Shootout in Lubbock.  The Red Raiders got up by 15 on the Longhorns in the 4th quarter.  Then Ehlinger took out his six shooters and the Horns also got a lucky bounce on a onside kick.  It lasted one OT and Texas applied its grip on Tech to escape with a win.

Player(s)of the Week : Breece Hall - RB - Iowa State : The second year RB opened the scoring with a 75 yard scamper in the 2nd quarter vs TCU.  He helped the Cyclones seal the win with 2 more scores in the 4th quarter.  Hall finished with 155 yards with those 3 scores.

Sam Ehlinger - QB - Texas : Arguably the leader in the clubhouse for the Heisman.  Versus the Red Raiders, Ehlinger tossed 5 tds, ran for another and lead the Horns back from down 15 in the last 3:13 of the game to force Overtime.  Also tossed a two point conversion to tie the game at 56 to send it to OT.  The Longhorns QB rushed for 70 yards and tossed 262 along with those scores.

2020 Week 2 Big XII Awards

With Baylor - Houston cancelled it was a 1 game week in the Big XII so this will be pretty simple of an awards post.

Team of the Week : Oklahoma State

Game of the Week : Oklahoma State 16-7 over Tulsa - The game was really ugly, IMO, to watch.  Neither team looked crisp which I would expect in the world of Covid College Football.

Player of the Week : Chuba Hubbard - RB - Oklahoma State - Hubbard scored the Cowboys only touchdown in the game and rushed for 93 yards in the 16-7 win.

2020 Week 1 Big XII Awards

Week 1 of the 2020 Big XII Season is in the books.  2 Games ended up being cancelled due to COVID-19 (Baylor & TCU).  I don't foresee the conference teams not named Texas or Oklahoma scheduling SunBelt teams in the future as the SBC went 3-0 as visitors vs the Big XII.   This weeks Big XII Results.

Team of the Week :  West Virginia - The Mountaineers had one of the worst rushing offenses in college football last year.  Week one they go out and roll up 329 yards rushing and racking up 5 touchdowns on the ground.  Alec Sinkfield and Leddie Brown both scored twice and ran for 123 yards against Eastern Kentucky.  Now can the keep that up against conference competition.

Game of the Week :  Arkansas State 35 - Kansas State 31 - Yes its a loss for the Big XII and an 0-2 week for the conference vs the SunBelt, but this game was back and forth all day.  KState pushed to a big lead.  Some trickery helped the Redwolves come back initially.  Some wind was taken out of the Wildcats sails with Arkansas State driving for the go ahead score, Safety Wayne Jones was taken off on a stretcher.  The RedWolves then marched down to score with 38 seconds left  on Jonathan Adams 3rd touchdown reception.  They then and held off a last hurrah by the Wildcats for the upset win in Manhattan.

Player of the Week :  Sam Ehlinger - QB - Texas -
What ever you can do I can do better?  Spencer Rattler goes off in the first half vs Missouri State and looked like he might have this wrapped up.  In comes the gunslinger.  Sam threw for 426 yards and 5 touchdowns while completing 75% of his passes.  He opened up with a 78 yard touchdown, came back then with scores on throws of 20, 40, 5, and 6 in route to a lead of 45-3 lead over UTEP at the half.  The Longhorns won 59-3 with Sam watching from the sidelines the majority of the second half.  The next 9 games the competition will get more difficult, but If Sam keeps this up OU may have a hard time claiming another Big XII title.  How great will the duel between Ehlinger and Spencer Rattler be in the Red River Shootout.

Hope you enjoyed this opening weekend with major college football.  Who knows how long we'll have it in this crazy year.  The ACC is already talking about how many schools need to be playing to not cancel the season.  The Big Ten is talking about a revote early this week for an October start.

One update to note, Baylor will now host Houston next week at noon on Fox.
