2012 College Football Awards

The college football season is close to being over.  Most all the awards have been awarded except the National Championship.  Before the Tide and Irish clash in Miami, here are the GFR College Football Awards.

LYNCH - TE'O - SNYDER - MILLER - KLEIN
Offensive Player of the Year - Jordan Lynch - QB - Northern Illinois : Lynch put up better numbers than Johnny Heisman, has the Huskies on a 12 game win streak, MAC Champions, oh and playing in the Orange Bowl.  He also lead the nation in rushing (going into bowl season) with 1771 rushing yards.  He also tossed the ball for 2962 yards and accounted for 43 Huskie touchdowns.

Defensive Player of the Year - Manti Te'o - LB - Notre Dame : I don't know if any player meant more to their team than Te'o did this year.  Not only did he make big plays in big games and key situations, he IS the heart and soul of this year's Irish.  If Te'o isn't there the Irish are probably and 8-4 team.  Instead they are 12-0 and playing for the BCS Championship.  Te'o had 7 picks for the Irish and 93 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Coach of the Year : Bill Snyder - Kansas State : Snyder has to be up for coach of the millennium   What he did his first go around at KState almost having them in the title game in 1998 and continuing success in the early 2000s.  Then to retire and comeback and have them 11-1 this year and a loss to Baylor away from playing Notre Dame for the title is amazing.

Big Ten Player of the Year - Braxton Miller - QB - Ohio State : Miller in year 1 under Urban Meyer has given the rest of the Big Ten a glimpse of what the Buckeyes will have the next few years, and it looks dangerous.  Miller accounted for 3200+ total yards for the Buckeyes and 28 touchdowns as the Buckeyes went 12-0 in their self imposed no post season year.

Big XII Player of the Year - Collin Klein - QB - Kansas State : How much would Klein and KState like to have the Baylor game back.  If they win in Waco they are playing in Miami for a title and Klein is the Heisman Winner.  Klein passed for 2490 yards, a 15-7 TD-INT ratio and added 890 on the ground with 22 scores. while leading the 'Cats to a Big XII title and Fiesta Bowl bid.

2011 College Football Awards

I’ve normally in the past split these out in to separate blogs, but I’m combining them into one big one this year.

Offensive Player of the Year – Robert Griffin III : QB : Baylor  - No other player was as important for his team than RG3 was.  He started the season on fire vs a strong TCU defense lighting them up and ended it 9-3 with a huge performance vs Texas’s strong D.  He was a little Michael Vick and Tom Brady all in one leading Baylor to their best season since 1986

Defensive Player of the year –Tyrone Mathieu : DB : LSU – The Honey Badger may have made more plays in college football than any other player this year.  It seemed every week there was a pick, forced fumble and recovery or TD for Mathieu, and capped it with a few huge plays in the SEC championship game over Georgia.

Coach of the Year – Mike Gundy : Oklahoma State – Gundy’s a man!  The Cowboys had an amazing year that should have ended in the BCS championship game but an overtime loss in Ames, Iowa (and an SEC Bias in human polls) have the 11-1 Big XII champs in the Fiesta Bowl.

Big Ten Player of the Year – Monte Ball : RB : Wisconsin – Mr Touchdown!  The Badger back tore through defenses behind the Badger OL for 32 touchdowns and 1759 yards.  He was dinged up a bit in the first game vs Michigan State and the Badgers National Title hopes were dashed, but then kept going and helped Wisconsin get to Back-to-Back Rose Bowls.

Big XII Player of the Year – Robert Griffin III : QB : Baylor – Griffin threw for almost 4000 yards and 36 touchdowns to only 6 picks.  The Bears QB lead Baylor to its best season since 1986 and an Alamo Bowl berth vs Washington.  He also took home the Heisman and Davey O’Brien awards.  Want to know something scary…he can come back next year too and the Bears may be even a better team!

Games of the Year (in no particular order)

Big XII Life Support - help needed

So no one in the Big XII wants to play with each other, especially big bully Deloss (Texas).  But they may have to and the bully to sock it in the nose and let them know they may be the big kid on the block but needs to learn some respect.

Who should cock their fist back?  Dan Beebe?  Yea right.  Beebe is that kid who is weak and attaches themselves to the bully to seem tougher.  Beebe could mess up jello.  Oklahoma is talking about taking its ball and going home (west) with little brother.

The answer: a fighting Irish.

Under Dan Beebe the Big XII teams aren’t playing nice. With the Big East collapsing, the Irish are in need of a home for its non football sports.  The ACC is swopping up Big East teams.  West Virginia may be the 14th school to the SEC.

The conference needs new and better leadership.  Someone needs to come together and get the remaining 9 together and sit down as 9 equal entities.  Everyone has the same piece of the pie in the conversation.  Then they need to target 3 schools.  Notre Dame, Louisville and TCU.   The later 2 will be easy targets; Notre Dame is the BIG Fish.  AD Jack Swarbuck said the Irish will remain independent unless there is a seismic shift.  The Big East collapsing is a seismic shift.

Now you’re not going to get them to come over just like that, and probably not Texas or OU.  So if I’m the other 9, the revenue is going to be greater on their hand….but not much.  It still needs equality.  Split it that 10% goes to the conf.  9% to the big three and then 7 to the rest.  To get those 3 to play nice, that will need to be done.

What you get is a nice conference you can split easily for football and you get a decent basketball conference.  It’s obviously Kansas’s league in basketball but adding Rick Pitino and the Irish program doesn’t hurt.  Texas & Oklahoma have had decent programs and K-State had some success previously.  Iowa State should be decent this year too.

With football split it as so, one division has Big 8 mainstays – OU/OSU/ISU/KSU/KU/Missouri.  The other is Notre Dame/Texas/TTech/TCU/Baylor/Louisville.  With OU-UT/ND in different divisions you should have more competitive balance.  Play the championship game in St Louis or Dallas and rotate it.

TV wise, the current package with ESPN/FOX and the Big XII is probably null and void.  With Notre Dame you already have NBC tied so just add more.  Other than Notre Dame and the Gator Bowl NBC has no presence in college football.  This adds to it and to the NBC Sports Channel (formerly VS).  Then add in a deal with Fox/ESPN and your sitting ok.

With Notre Dame in the mix you can probably get a better bottom tier bowl too.  Who’s not happy here?
Everyone is happy.  The little brothers of the Texa$-10 are happy.  The Pac-12 isn’t 16.  The Big Ten is at 12.  The ACC and SEC are the only 14 team conf.  They are happy.

Ok, well maybe Dan Beebe isn’t happy but I’m sure he’ll find a spot in the Texas Athletic Department somewhere at a cubicle; heck doesn’t he have that already?

Big Ten Football – Week 3 Predictions

Last week we were treated to a shoot out under the lights in Ann Arbor as Denard Robinson continued to build a legacy vs the Irish, scoring 14 points in the last 90 seconds to top the Irish.  This week the Irish continue their Big Ten slate vs the Spartans, in South Bend.

Big Ten Game of the Week
Michigan State vs Notre Dame

The Spartans have looked good good this year beating up on a couple lesser opponents.  The Irish are 0-2 and Mt Kelly is feeling some heat and may be close to blowing again soon.  Last year Sparty pulled off the Play of the Year with a fake field goal to top the Irish.  I don't think this week you'll need see that type of dramatics.  Sparty handles the Irish.  Michigan State 34 - Notre Dame 23

Week 3 Picks
Illinois vs Arizona State - Arizona State (M/C/K)
Indiana vs South Carolina State – Indiana (M/C/K)
Iowa vs Pittsburgh – Iowa (M/C/K)
Michigan vs Eastern Michigan – Michigan (M/C/K)
Michigan State @ Notre Dame – Michigan State (M/C/K)
Minnesota vs Miami (Ohio) – Minnesota (M/K) : Miami(Oh) (C)
Nebraska vs Washington – Nebraska (M/C/K)
Northwestern @ Army – Northwestern (M/C/K)
Ohio State @ Miami (Fl) – Ohio State (M/C/K)
Penn State @ Temple – Penn State (M/C/K)
Purdue vs Southeast Missouri – Purdue (M/C/K)
Wisconsin vs Northern Illinois – Wisconsin (M/C/K)

Big Ten Awards - Week 2

First off, thoughts go out to Minnesota and Head Coach Jerry Kill who had a seizure on the sideline with 20 seconds left in the game.  Hope he gets well and back soon!  Also thoughts go to former Iowa DB Brett Greenwood who collapsed at a workout at his highschool Friday.  Hope they get back and going soon!

Team of the Week: Michigan State : The Spartans came in today as the #17 team in the nation, and will be top 15 after today.  They will compete with Nebraska for the Legends Title.  They hosted Florida Atlantic, yes it was just the Owls, but they rolled and did what they were supposed to from the get go!  44-0

Helmet Sticker: Last year he did it with huge offensive numbers, this year they weren't as big but just as dramatic.  Denard Robinson led the Wolverines to 14 points in the last 1:40 of the game with huge throws.  He ended with 338 yards 4 passing TDs and one rushing TD.  The last coming with 2 seconds left.  The dude is just amazing, and I don't know what else to see about him.  The last 5 minutes of the game were great.

Game of the Week: Got a couple place you could go here in the Big Ten.  Of course the thriller under the lights in Ann Arbor where the Irish and Wolverines went back and forth in the last 90 seconds for 21 points.  That has to take the cake.  But there are 2 other games that deserve mention.

Toledo almost became the first team from Ohio to beat the Buckeyes since 1909.  They lit a scare in Ohio State most the game and drove down inside the redzone with a chance to score under a minute left but came up short.

Finally in Ames, Iowa and Iowa State scored TDs in the final 5 minutes of regulation then went 3 OTs and ended with the Cyclones scoring on an option from Steele Jantz to James White.  It's Paul Rhoads 3rd Big Win in as many years (Nebraska-09/Texas-10/Iowa-11).

Highlight of the week: Michigan's game winning touchdown vs Notre Dame.

Big Ten Takeaway: Michigan State, Wisconsin, Nebraska are going to be the class of the conference.  Michigan is going to be exciting and in every game as long as Denard is healthy.
National Takeaway: College football rules!  I'm sorry NFL but yes your game Thursday was amazing, but college football has seen thrillers the first 2 weeks.  Take out all the Texas and realignment drama, College Football is the best thing out there!  Now if we can just get the BCS thing fixed!

Big Ten Jimmy Johns Challenge:
Week – Matt (9-3)          Chad (9-3)          Kyle (8-4)
Season – Matt (19-5)          Chad (20-4)          Kyle (18-6)

Big Ten Football – Week 2 Predictions

Last week the Big Ten went 10-2 (Indiana and Minnesota were the L’s) and my picks went 10-2.  Mother Nature also had a big hand in last week’s games delaying games at Iowa and eventually canceled the game at Michigan.  The Big Ten has a couple pretty B1G games this week so here we go.

For the first time ever the Big House will be under the lights!  And who better to have their first night game vs than Notre Dame.  The 2 winningest programs in NCAA football history.  Throw back jerseys are designed for this game.  Brian Kelly may blow up a time or too and Brady Hoke hopefully won’t have another wet t-shirt contest going on.  As for the game, the Irish will start their 2nd qb in as many weeks.  Denard Robinson led a 4th quarter comeback last year vs the Irish and put up an insane amount of yards, but last week was pretty mild in Hoke’s new offense and Brandon Herron did something never done in a Michigan uniform ever with scoring 2 defensive return touchdowns in the same game.  This week I think we see a classic close game, I don’t think either team pulls away from each other and in the end Denard Robinson does it again and leads Michigan to the win.  MICHIGAN 32 – NOTRE DAME 26.

Week 2 Big Ten Picks
Illinois vs South Dakota State - Illinois
Indiana vs Virginia - Virginia
Iowa @ Iowa State - Iowa
Michigan vs Notre Dame – Michigan (M)(C)/Notre Dame (K)
Michigan State vs Florida Atlantic – Michigan State
Minnesota vs New Mexico State – Minnesota
Nebraska vs Fresno State - Nebraska
Northwestern vs Eastern Illinois - Northwestern
Ohio State vs Toledo – Ohio State
Penn State vs Alabama - Alabama
Purdue @ Rice - Purdue
Wisconsin vs Oregon State – Wisconsin

**UPSET ALERT**
Iowa @ Iowa State – it’s in Ames, and crazier things have happened there.
Purdue @ Rice – The Boilers had to have a miracle at home vs. Middle Tennessee State, could get sneaky vs. the Owls.

Jimmy Johns Big Ten Challenge
Week 2   -  Matt (0-0)          Chad (0-0)          Kyle (0-0)

Who’s in your 5 College Football Entrances/Traditions

Getting pumped for the start of the college football season, going to take a look around the nation at my top 5 college football entrances/traditions.  It all starts in highschool running through cheerleader decorated paper and tearing it up to college teams touching an symbol or other extravagant actions.  Each home team puts a twist on how the teams enter the field and pump up the home crowd.  A lot of them are the same and copy cat rip offs but a few have stuck for years and stick out

Honorable Mention– Clemson (Howard’s Rock), Notre Dame (Play like a Champion Today)

5.Ohio State / Michigan – The 2 Big Ten Rivals are tied once again, and both are ones I’ve seen in person.  Ohio State’s script Ohio (though by the band) is actually pretty cool to see in person and then the tuba player dots the ‘I’ or a famous alum does.  They then do a mock swarm and run on to the field.  Michigan has been hitting the “GO BLUE” Banner for 40+ years now.  The Big House is a frenzy when the team runs from the locker rooms and jump and touch the banner held up  at mid field to the other sideline of the field while “Hail to the Victors” is playing.  Both are cool to see and glad I can say I’ve seen them both in person.

4. Miami(Fl) – The innovators.  I remember in the 80s when Miami was coming on tv the entrance was something that matched the Bulls introductions in the 90s.  The Old Orange Bowl was spooky enough, and then to add the smog machine and the players then running through it on to the field.  Back then, talk about some intimidating going on.  It’s why it’s the U.

3.Iowa  - Back in Black Blaring and Enter Sandman blaring throughout Kinnick.  The big screen with the Hawk Semi running over the opponent on its way to Kinnick.  The I-O-W-A flags followed by the swarm, all the guys as one coming on to the field.  Hawkeye Fight Song then played by the Iowa Marching band.  Almost getting goosebumps (I want some football!)

2.Colorado – The stadium is cool no matter what you say with the mountains there…then add in a 500 pound buffalo running at speeds of 25 miles an hour out of the tunnel.  Don’t get in the way of Ralphie!

1.Florida State – The only thing that may be able to slow down Ralphie is a spear…and that’s what happens in Talahassee.  Chief Osceola and Renegade ride out to the 50 yard line at Doak Campbell Stadium and throws a spear into the center of the FSU logo.  Oh and the spear is ON FIRE.  For an added twist when the Nole’s host the Florida Gators, Chief Osceola jumps off the horse and standing drives the spear in to the ground.  Add in the warchant and its pretty cool.

There’s my take…what’s yours?

Big Ten Expansion

Everyone has a thought on Big Ten Expansion and the affects it will have on the college sports landscape. I put out a blog a while ago on who I thought the 12th team might be. Then shortly after the Big Ten said the would entertain expansion, the Super Conference notion’s came up and there is talk of a 14 and 16 team Big Ten. Then the Pac-10 expanding to 12 to get a title game and then the SEC doing the same as the Big Ten. So the landscape is going to feel a shockwave after the Big Ten says what they are going to do.

The small shockwave and what I think would be the best would be Notre Dame joining the Big Ten and adding it to 12. I think there is a chance yet that this happens. 25-30 million dollars a year and less travel and more tradition is better than 8 million for just an outlet of one of its sports. The Big Ten Network would give it more money and an outlet for all sports. Add 1 if it is ND, signed sealed delivered. Get the Big Ten Title game ready at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The bigger shockwave will come if the Irish don’t make the smart move, and the Big Ten then adds 3 schools. I truly believe that if the Big Ten gets Notre Dame, they won’t go to 3. They won’t need to. If the Irish say no, look for a 14 team conference. The talk of 16 is too many. It would dilute the product I think. Sometimes you can be TOO BIG. So going to 14, who are the 3 teams? I think it is obvious that the Big XII and Big East are the targets. The 3 teams being Rutgers from the Big East and Missouri and Nebraska from the Big XII.

All 3 are a part of the AAU, which all 11 Big Ten institutions are a part of. Rutgers brings in the New York New Jersey market to the league. They have updated facilities, and they have a good football and women’s basketball program. Some may say if the NY/NJ market was so big in college sports, why isn’t the Big East more of a commodity. Well would you get up for South Florida and Cincinnati coming to the New York area, or Penn State, Michigan and Ohio State? The answer is simple.

Missouri brings in 2 other big markets too in St. Louis and Kansas City, and Nebraska the Omaha market. More television revenue. Both schools are also getting hosed in the Big XII that is controlled by the schools down south. The Big XII’s TV package is terrible and both would increase their yearly revenue by somewhere around 2-3 times. They also get to join the Big Ten bowl alliance and have the options of 2 BCS bowls, the Capital One Bowl, Outback, and Gator bowls. There is no other conference that has better bowl options then the Big Ten.

I think the divisions would look like this:
Division 1
Illinois
Iowa
Minnesota
Missouri
Nebraska
Penn State
Wisconsin

Division 2
Indiana
Michigan
Michigan State
Northwestern
Ohio State
Purdue
Rutgers

Add Notre Dame, and its easy and clean, otherwise, the other conferences better get ready to go and prepare to feel the Big Ten shockwaves.

Big Ten + 2?

So there is the talk and debate heating up now (thanks Barry Alvarez) of the Big Ten adding a 12th team and adding a championship game. Alvarez feels like a lot of the media, that the Big Ten is irrelevant the weekend before Thanksgiving. He is right. The publicity for the conference is about 0 when the SEC, Big XII and ACC are hosting title games and the Pac 10 is playing into the first weekend in December.

So the talk is….who should it be?

The obvious choice is Notre Dame. Notre Dame is actually taking a pay cut being on NBC compared to the Big Ten Network. How exclusive is that deal now? The Irish could have national broadcasts on the BTN, ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC. Better known outlets for college football. And if the Irish join the conference, how many more cable providers will want the BTN? Then there is the bowl situation, a 6-6 Big Ten team gets the Alamo/Champs or Insight Bowl in Arizona or Florida or Texas. A 6-6 Irish team has to wait it out and get options of the Pizza Pizza Bowl in Detroit? And next year the Big Ten takes away another option from the Irish taking the Gator Bowl away from the Big East. That’s 5+ new years day options for the Big Ten to play on Jan 1 or later. Easy choice, they are in the Big Ten footprint, they are irrelevant until they fire a coach. Join the Big Ten!
Notre Dame NBC Money

After the Irish sit on their high horse and decline the conference invite, the next choice should be Nebraska. The Huskers are getting crapped on by the Big XII. The Big XII has terrible tv deals, terrible bowl options and only care about 2 teams. The LongHorns and Sooners are like the Yankees and Redsox. It all flows through them. The Huskers joining would revitalize their football program and start new rivalries with Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan & Ohio State.

The next would be Missouri. They bring in 2 big television markets. St Louis and Kansas City. They are in the region, would have natural rivalries with Iowa & Illinois. They like Nebraska are good academic institutions (yes there is more than just sports involved in these decisions)

Finally I would look at Rutgers. They would be able to for a natural grouping with Penn State. A really good academic institution. And well if you look at money, there is the New York/New Jersey television market. Hello more cable providers and tv sets for the Big Ten Network.

So who should it be? It should be the Irish, but we know that won’t happen, so it should be Nebraska!

Your thoughts? React America!
